Representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, at the ceremony was the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha on Wednesday.
According to him, community development is a key part of the Navy’s civil-military cooperation efforts.
Vice Admiral Idi Abbas noted that the Quick Impact Project Scheme was established to address critical community needs and strengthen relations between the Armed Forces and the people.
He said “the intervention reflects the Navy’s belief that national security and prosperity are strengthened when communities are empowered, and described the clinics as timely for improving oral healthcare and access to antiretroviral therapy and counselling.
He urged the community to protect and maintain the facilities for present and future generations, and commended the project facilitator, Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, for identifying his community’s healthcare needs and utilising the CNS intervention scheme to execute the project, saying, “leadership is most meaningful when it impacts lives positively.”
He also acknowledged the Lagos State Government, traditional institution, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, community leaders, contractors and other stakeholders, noting that, the partnership demonstrated the collaboration effort between government, military and local communities to support sustainable development.
He assured that the Navy would continue to support initiatives promoting peace, security and social cohesion.
Earlier at the event, the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Special Adviser on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, said the intervention underscores the importance of making essential healthcare accessible within communities and not just building hospitals.
He said, “the Dental Clinic will improve access to oral healthcare and encourage early treatment, while the Heart-to-Heart Centre will provide counselling, prevention and antiretroviral treatment services for people living with or seeking care for HIV.”
He commended the Navy’s commitment demonstrated beyond its conventional security responsibilities.
