The Cross River State Police Command has launched the “Operation Velvet Marine” to strengthen security across the state’s waterways and curb piracy, sea robbery, smuggling, and other maritime crimes.
The Command flagged the operation on Friday at the Dolphin Marine Base, Calabar, and led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah AKATA on Friday in Calabar.
Ordue described the moves as a strategic response to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to dominate the waterways and deny criminals freedom of action, especially ahead of the Ember Season.
According to the State Marine Officer, CSP Frankline Mbah, the operation will involve daily visibility patrols, intelligence-led and joint operations, as well as community engagement. It will cover the Calabar Channel, Qua River, Great Kwa River and adjoining creeks, with focus on protecting commuters, fishermen, and maritime businesses.
The Commissioner charged Marine Police personnel to be professional, disciplined, and uphold human rights while working closely with the Nigerian Navy, NPA, NIWA, and other security agencies.
Residents and riverine communities have also been urged to provide timely information to aid the fight against maritime crime.
CP Ordue reassured residents, maritime operators, and visitors that the Command remains committed to securing Cross River State.
He noted that Operation Velvet Marine will be sustained throughout the Ember Season and beyond to ensure safer waterways, protect lives and property, and create a secure environment for maritime commerce and investment.
