Gideon Aloba, a chieftain of the Labour Party in Osun State, Gideon Aloba, has drummed support for the transparency and accountability in the management of public resources even as the new tax laws take effect from January 1, 2026.
He also urged the Federal Government to demonstrate transparency in the new laws.
He said any administration that fails to properly account for public resources has no moral right to impose fresh tax obligations on citizens.
Aloba stressed that Nigerians should not be compelled to pay more taxes without first being shown how existing revenues are being spent.
This information was contained in a statement signed by Aloba on Friday.
He urged the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the tax law until it demonstrates transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
According to him, “The Nigerian people must not be made to feel that their collective labour exists only to fund the extravagant lifestyles of the political elite. We therefore demand that the Federal Government open its financial books and make public all expenditures before proceeding with the implementation of the new tax regime.
“Governance cannot thrive in secrecy while citizens already burdened by hardship, inflation and economic uncertainty are asked to contribute more to the public purse,” he added.
Aloba, who contested the Ijesa South Federal Constituency seat in 2023, said the government remains responsible to give Nigerians a clear, honest and comprehensive account of public spending before the new tax law takes effect.
