The United States’ State Department on Thursday announced a contribution towards humanitarian efforts in the North-West region, Nigeria.
US donated the sum of $5m to the United Nations Children’s Fund to address acute malnutrition among children in the region.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the US Mission to Nigeria, the funding will enable UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition support to at least 70,000 children with acute malnutrition in Northwest Nigeria.
The assistance was geared toward the provision of essential supplies.
The funds according to the statement will be used by UNICEF to provide ready-to-use food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies.
The statement read, “The State Department provided $5m to UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition support to at least 70,000 children with acute malnutrition in Northwest Nigeria.
“These funds will be used by UNICEF to provide ready-to-use food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies.
“This commitment to donate lifesaving assistance affirms US global leadership, strength, and compassion.”
The North-West faces serious food insecurity and malnutrition, worsened by conflict and displacement, which disrupts access to farmland and basic services hence, UNICEF runs nutrition programmes in the region, providing ready-to-use therapeutic food and medical supplies to treat children with acute malnutrition.
