Justice Babatunde Adejumo, the Administrator of the National Judiciary Institute
Justice Babatunde Adejumo, the Administrator of the National Judiciary Institute on Friday said public confidence in court remains a key component for democracy.
He said the Judiciary system must always maintain fairness and impartiality and without fear or favour in court dealings.
He spoke at the pre-conference media briefing on Thursday in Abuja to herald the 2025 All Nigerian Judges’ Conference of the Superior Courts.
Justice Adejumo said a judiciary must be one that strengthens the rule of law, protects fundamental rights and upholds the values of equity and fairness.
Speaking about the conference, he said it will be held on Monday, 17 November, and provide a platform to deliberate ways to reinforce judicial independence, enhance ethical standards and ensure that courts remain accessible, transparent and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.
According to him,” the National Judicial Institute remains committed to equipping judicial officers and their support staff with the knowledge, skills and values needed to meet the challenges of modern adjudication through capacity building, research and continuous education.”
The event with the theme, “Building a Confident Judiciary,” approved by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the NJI Board of Governors, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, was both timely and compelling in view of the crucial role the Judiciary plays in sustaining democracy, Justice Adejumo said.
He also acknowledged the role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability in the judicial process, noting that judicial correspondents serve as the bridge between the courts and the public.
He said, “Media reportage shapes public perception, fosters accountability and helps improve judicial processes. This partnership between the Judiciary and the media is essential to building public trust and deepening the understanding of judicial work.
“As we move towards the conference, together we can build a Judiciary that inspires trust, commands respect and contributes meaningfully to the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria,” he said.
