The Nasarawa State branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has called for probe over an attack on one of its members during the screening of contestants for election as new state officials on Friday.
The group’s demands was contained in a communique issued to journalists by the union’s chairman, Sunday Daniel, in Lafia, on Monday.
The union condemned the attack on the contestant’s vehicle by a suspected hoodlum at the screening venue in the Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
The union also condemned an attack on its National Returning Officer by some contestants who also allegedly destroyed electoral materials at the event.
“The JUSUN Nasarawa State frowns on the unjustifiable attack on the vehicle of one of the contestants by an unidentified hoodlum, the attack on the National Returning Officer, and the destruction of electoral materials by some contestants at the venue of the screening in Akwanga.
“This action is highly condemned and unacceptable by the union.
“The leadership of JUSUN Nasarawa State, therefore, calls on security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, investigate the matter and fish out the perpetrators of this dastardly act.
“We pray to her lordship, the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State and the security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the culprit to book,” the communique read.
The union also called on members to disregard the congress meeting and caretaker committee set up by a concerned group, noting that only elected officials of JUSUN had the right to call for such a meeting, as enshrined in the constitution of the union.
“Let it be clearly stated to all members that it is only the elected officials of JUSUN that have the right to call for a congress meeting as enshrined in our constitution, Rule 17(1a and b).
“On the caretaker committee, it shall be constituted by the National Working Committee in an event where an election is not held as planned in line with Rule 6a and b of JUSUN Constitution.
“Therefore, the general public and members are advised to disregard any congress meeting by unidentified persons,” the communique concluded.
