Athletes from 43 countries are bracing for the African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships competition in Abeokuta from 16 through July 20.
As more Nigerians prepare for the competition, organisers of the event revealed the participation of 937 athletes and officials for the five-day event, proposed to hold at the refurbished MKO Abiola Sports Arena.
According to the National Sports Commission, host nation Nigeria will present 110 athletes, 60 men and 50 women, supported by 22 officials. South Africa follows closely with a 100-member contingent, while Ethiopia, Kenya and Algeria are also sending large teams.
The NSC also stated that preparations are ongoing in the capital city of Ogun State, with final touches being made to logistics, accommodation, transportation and other key areas.
The event, sanctioned by the Confederation of African Athletics, is expected to feature strong representation from countries including Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon and Uganda.
It marks another major sports event for Abeokuta, just two months after the city hosted over 15,000 athletes and officials at the 2024 National Sports Festival.
Nigeria’s athletics federation hopes the home advantage will translate to a strong medal performance, while the event is also seen as a stepping stone for young athletes aiming for global competitions.
The tournament is expected to draw attention from scouts, coaches and federations as Africa’s next generation of sprinters, jumpers and throwers take centre stage.
